DEFINING PRACTICE A - ONE YEAR COURSE
This exciting year-long practical course is led by artist Jesse Leroy Smith with visiting artists joining him each weekend. The Defining Practice course is now well into it's fourth year and the art school is currently accepting applications for the 2018 course which will again be run over six weekends eight weeks apart starting in January of 2018. The course combines practical sessions on each of the weekends alongside one-to-one tuition and group tutorials.
The course is aimed at those who wish to create a body of work over a year through which they might gain a stronger sense of their own artistic voice and the methods, media and processes that are most suited to their work.
Each student will be set personal projects within the weekend but also between sessions. By working with the tutor in a group dynamic students can share discoveries, influences and connections from contemporary artists to historical references gaining inspiration from the artistic journeys of fellow students. There will be no more than ten students in the group.
An example weekend might include the first day in which every student would bring along a recent work they had made or some source material from which they would make several fresh works from scratch during the day using different painting and drawing processes under the guidance of Jesse and a visiting artist. The tuition would be one-to-one and also group demonstrations with specific guidance given to each student in the group of no more than eleven people attending. With lots of materials to-hand provided by the art school there would be a continual flow of new types of painting, drawing and other media to explore and constant individual help to guide students with their work. The second day of the weekend would include a session with another visiting artist who would show their own approach to their artistic practice with themes such as using sketchbooks and source material alongside one's artistic practice, appropriation of imagery from the world around you, experimenting with materials and processes among other themes. This would be followed by further practical work and one-to-one tuition.
There will be the opportunity to cover multi-media practice including painting, printmaking, collage and photography among other media.
There will be a session towards the end of the year on what options to explore after the course in regard to exhibiting your work. Tailored guidance in creating a coherent portfolio would be available to those who wished to gain help in applying to courses after the Defining Practice course.
Application will be through digital images (around 5-8 jpgs) sent in of your work by email info (@) newlynartschool.co.uk with a short covering letter within the email saying why you would like to do the course and what experience you have of drawing and painting.
