Newlyn School of Art has now launched a new One Year Mentoring Course which is aimed at enabling students to develop their artistic practice over a year of one to one tutorials and mentoring under the guidance of a host of well known artists.

The course which started in October of 2013 will take place over three terms on Thursdays at Newlyn School of Art with regular one to one tutorials from artists including Course Leader Gareth Edwards, and Tutors Jesse Leroy Smith, Naomi Frears, Sam Bassett, Kate Walters, Lucy Willow, Jason Walker, Marie Claire Hamon, Jessica Cooper, Maggie O'Brien and Mark Surridge.

The course is unusual in that it aims to give a very high level of Tutor time with two artist Tutors mentoring the group together at all times. Practical work will be done between sessions and works in progress or recently completed work brought into tutorials will add to the opportunity for students to gain valuable ongoing feedback on their work and help in understanding the wider context of the work they are making under experienced artist Tutors. In this way consistent encouragement and guidance can be given on a continuous basis over the year aimed at building the development and confidence of each individual student.

Gareth Edwards will lead the course and be the most regular tutor attending every session encouraging students with an eye on their development over the course. All of the other tutors will come in on rotation alongside the Course Leader making every session fresh with a different imput from a wealth of respected artists for tutorials, presentations and discussions.

There will be a structure to each day beginning with a tutor led presentation, then one to one tutorials followed by presentations by students on their current work and group tutorials.

Jesse Leroy Smith will lead a module which will help students to understand the wealth of exhibiting opportunities there are for artists to engage with from approaching commercial galleries through to artist led ‘pop up’ exhibitions in disused spaces.

There will be a final show at the end of the course through which students will learn how to curate and promote an exhibition and gain the opportunity to show their work to a new audience.

At the end of each day talks will be given by specialists from Tate, Newlyn Art Gallery, Arts Council England, there will be visits to leading galleries in Cornwall including Millennium in St Ives with a talk about how artists might gain success approaching galleries and a visit to Kestle Barton to learn about the evolution of a curated exhibition, there will also be talks at the school from representatives from national art competitions and artists’ residency programmes. These afternoon talks will also be an opportunity for students to hear respected visiting artists talk about their work and careers.

One added element is that we will be offering students one extra tutorial 3-4 months after the course ends so that everyone has the opportunity to reflect on what they have done after the course and gain one to one guidance with a tutor at this stage.

Selection will be via an initial send in of five to ten digital images of work with an accompanying c.v. and covering letter saying why you would like to take the course ( send to ) followed by an informal interview with portfolios where appropriate. Everyone who applies will be given the chance to come in for interview. We are keen to get a range of applicants and previous exhibition history or formal art education is not a prerequisite. We are also open to applications from students who work in a range of different media.

Our first year of mentoring is now underway. The application deadline for the next One Year Mentoring Course starting in October of 2014 will be late summer of 2014. We would be interested to hear from anyone interested in applying for the next year by email
