CONVERSATIONS WITH LANDSCAPE

Established Australian painters and teachers, Debbie Mackinnon and Mike Staniford, partners in life and art, have diverse yet complementary skills, with a long history and understanding of the UK landscape. This dynamic four day course will take students out into wild and dramatic Cornish locations to make exciting quick drawings and paintings, with the opportunity to develop works further in the studio.

Both artists present their individual and joint approach to observing a place with initial field studies, investigating the topography and questioning what lies beneath? They each bring extensive experience working en plein air in a wide variety of landscapes - ranging from the sensational colours of the Australian outback, to misty Umbrian hills and the rugged coastline of Cornwall.

Debbie and Mike will demonstrate techniques on working quickly outside, with spontaneous, confident mark making, using a variety of mixed media materials and exciting drawing implements. A playful and fearless approach will be a strong feature of the course. Much of the time will involve working in stunning Cornish locations to respond to the weather and help students’ understanding of the way light and colour play a key role in shaping an artist’s response to place. Back in the studio they will show how to translate these quick works into more finished paintings, to crop in and deconstruct the drawings; to scale up the smallest thumbnails into larger works on paper; always working across that thrilling boundary where realism meets abstraction.

Students should be able to walk into some remote spots carrying their limited art materials (from the minibus drop off spot). Everyone should feel more confident in their practice and methodology by the end of the four-day course.
