THE HUMAN FORM

A conversation with the figure.

The Human Form is an exciting three-day oil painting course with artist Jason Walker which uses observation as a bridge to making representations of the human form, with a wide range of potential outcomes. The human form continues to be an enduring subject for contemporary artists to this day and this course opens the doors to limitless ways of creating artworks through different methods, ideas, and exercises to explore, observe, analyse and record the innate mannerisms and characteristics of the figure.

The course will centre around ideas of using paint as a tool for drawing, an investigation of the figure through paint – encompassing traditional methods for capturing the figure such as the essence of oil painting, and alla prima techniques – working in both monochrome and colour.

The course encourages a line of enquiry, a conversation with the human form through a series of approaches incorporating a range of poses that encompass both short and long studies. The primary purpose is to increase observation and to gather useful information about your subject, however, what you do with that information and knowledge will be personal to you and this exploration will be supported throughout the course by Jason.

The studies, (through drawing with dry materials on the first morning and then using paint thereafter for the remainder of the three days) can be finished works in themselves or simply information from which to build a more considered work.

During the three days, we will cover value, colour, measurement, mapping of form and basic anatomy with a focus on the three masses, Head, Ribcage and Pelvis and the role they play in the mechanics of body pose and balance - gesture and movement, both real and perceived through a range of poses, long and short from the head to the full figure.

The mornings would consist of shorter exploratory poses and exercises, and the afternoons will focus on longer periods of study using a limited palette.

Throughout the three days, we will refer to the methods of artists from the past to the present day where the figure is prominent in their work. Artists who are likely to come up in discussion might include Degas, Picasso, Bonnard, Vuillard, Giacometti, Matisse, Auerbach, Freud, Lisa Brice, Jenna Gribbon, Marlene Dumas and Paul Rego among many others.

The course is suitable for all levels of previous experience as Jason teaches each student individually to their level as he goes around the class.
